I am thinking of getting the Mirena Coil put in. I am aged 31 with 2 children aged 2.5 yrs and 4 months and I am almost certain that I don't what any more kids.
Have any of you got anything positve or negative to say about this method of contraception? Is weight gain common? I am nearly back to pre-pregnancy wieght of 9st and I don't want to gain weight. What about libido does it drop with the coil in?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

| Have a look further down. There is topic "remobing mirena coli" which has some comments on how people found it. Haven't tried it myself ... |

| I had the Mirena coil fitted about 6 months after birth of DS. I had a really bad experience of it I must admit. I gained a stone in weight, my hair started falling out (it had stopped since after DS), and I developed a strange acne on my thighs. I felt so depressed at weight gain as I had breastfed and was back to pre-pregnancy weight before I had the coil fitted. Would never do it again. Sorry, I hope you find the right solution for you. Posh. |

I had the mirena coil in for nearly eighteen months before getting it removed to try for number 2 - didn't have any negative effects from it, only found that my periods were quite light but lasted a lot longer - suspect that perhaps the flow was delayed, and because I was using pads rather than tampons perhaps things were not soaked up as quickly! (Sorry - too much information!). But no negative comments to make really.

there is another thread from lastyear sometime re the mirena. i had one and would NEVER have one again. i was made to feel that my side effects were imagioned as no-one else had complained, but nothing felt right when i had it in. when i stumbled on the thread here, i realised that a LOT of women had the same side effects. mine were: permanent pmt, almost depression, weight gain, chronic migranes, sever pain on my left side, loss of libido, i was always feeling sick, my whole system seemed to be so run down.
anyway, do a search for the thread, and make up your own mind. |

Here's my story to add to the pot and I'd be grateful if anyone has any similar experiences to tell. After the birth of my ds (1st child), I had the mirena coil fitted as it seemed like a good alternative to the pill, which had never quite agreed with me. I didn't notice major side effects, except that my periods, though quite light, lasted for ages - very frustrating and as people have said earlier, didn't help one feel clean (while menstruation is normal and natural, there's a limit!!) You can see my earlier post when I was saying that I had no problems with it. I didn't notice any weight gain, and after eighteen months decided to go for another baby and had it taken out October 2004. So far so good.
Did a pregnancy test in Jan 2005 and it was positive, but started bleeding almost immediately, so had to be scanned for early miscarriage. The pregnancy was continuing at that stage (c.6 weeks) but there turned out to be a large clot in my uterus that was getting in the way of things. This did not clear, and after three more scans, at 10.5 weeks it was confirmed that the clot had not cleared so the foetus had not had space to form properly and the pregnancy had stopped at about 9.5 weeks. I had a D&C the next day (10 days ago now). I was of course sad and disappointed, but all the to-ing and fro-ing had prepared us somewhat for the worst, so I'm reasonably philosophical and looking forward to getting back into the saddle.
However, I'm developing a theory, which while probably not provable, may be of interest. I do feel better in myself now than I have done for a while and looking back, the mirena probably didn't do my sex drive any favours, and I did get worse PMT than I ever had before. But I suspect that the blood clot possibly started back when I had the coil in - I certainly felt that the bleeding I had was not 'clean' menstruation, and the fact that it always dragged out so long suggests to me that it wasn't clearing properly.
I'm not seeking to blame anything or anyone, or indeed to scare anyone unduly, because each person reacts to these things differently, but it might something to be aware of if you are planning to conceive again and you notice similar side effects to mine. If anyone has had a similar experience I'd be really interested to hear. |

| can i ask any of you that have replied to this thread did you get your gynie to put the coil in or was it your doctor? i'm thinking of getting one and have discussed it with my gynie, he informed me that if put in under anesthetic there are no problems (ie put in by him) but if put in by a doctor there can be side effects as it's not put in properly in a lot of cases. can anyone help me on this as i don't want to go ahead if there is a chance of side effects! |

Hi,
I had a mirena coil fitted when my second baby was 1. I started bleeding immediately and was passing clots the size of grapefruits. Went back to the hospital and was kept in for 5 days after clapsing in the corridor because of a peforiated uterus and was boarder line for a blood transfusion. A few years later had 3 m/cs one after the other before going on to have my last baby. (We still wonder was the mirena experience anything to do with the cause of the m/c's). I suppose we'll never know. That's just my experience and a know a good few people who have it and think it's brillient.

I got the mirena coil last february. Like you I've had two and am pretty sure I don't want any more but as DS2 was still under one I decided to wait a wee while for the snip and use the mirena until we were absolutely certain. I bled for a long time after putting it on - I think I had only just stopped when I went for the 6 week check if even. Once that ended though I had months and months without a period which was great and have only had one or two since. My GP said it was fairly normal to be irregular and I'm enjoying it though like others said when it comes it lasts longer though is generally lighter. Some of the stories above are worrying but you might get the same if you asked for people's experience of the pill. The reason I chose mirena is because as the hormone dose is localised it is a smaller dose of hormones in your bloodstream and it's progesterone rather than oestrogen. Oestrogen is a factor in breast cancer which is in my family. I did try the progesterone pill but you have to take it at the same time every day and with two babies I could never remember! I got it done by a family planning doc who was excellent - my gp recommended her. Good luck with the decision. Bean |

Aish, to answer your question I got my put in by my gynie under general anaesthetic - his preferred way and so far, no probs.
RR I had two months of up and down, irregular bleeding and now four months later, it had all settled down, light but irregular bleeding, no need to worry about taking the pill (have 2 DS's 29mths & 7 mths) but I have gained weight (that could be down to over eating and drinking after having DS1). 3 SIL's, 1 friend had it and never had problems.

I have the Mirena Coil in now over 2 years and I have to say it was the best move I ever made. My periods are so light you'd nearly miss them and I didn't gain weight and my mood is as is always was and everything else is as is. I'd give it a try if I were you and just watch out for symptoms as I do know someone who had bad experience but see how you go and have it removed again if not suitable. Best of luck. J. |

| I've got the copper coil in, it's more difficult to find someone to put it in, as the mirena is more common. However I had a bad reaction to the chemicals in the pill so didn't want any progesterone in me. I've found the copper coil brilliant, I had very bad mood swings on the pill and terrible pmt + low libido. With this there are none, apart from the fact that periods are a bit heavier. I think it's a matter of finding something that's right for you though. |

Hi Everyone, I just got out my Mirena coil last week after havin it in since August'04 as I'm hoping to try for no.2! I was surprised when the gp told me it could be 18mths before I may conceive again. How soon has other people conceived or how long did you have to wait for a period to come? I had the coil fitted after i had my daughter and i thought it was great as i only had spots of blood twice over last 2.5yrs, although i never had periods much except on pill, also no cramps or anything like the pill effects. I don't know about weight gain but find it hard to lose weight since i got it in and haven't made it back down to my weight before i got pregnant (carrying an extra 7lbs). My husband reckoned my mood changed (could have been all the life changes though at time) and since i came off it my libido has soared which looking back it wasn't always that high. He said he could feel the strings but i could never feel them and had no probs from an intercourse perspective. Everyone is so different and the human body changes so much. I'm sure no drug in ur system is good but it's a hell of alot better than the pill! why isn't there a coil for men!!!!! |
