Does anyone know at what age a baby can sleep through the night without being fed? I know its the million dollar question but I would love to hear what other people do. My 9 month old goes to bed at 7.30ish and I feed her at 11 (before I go to sleep myself - a dream feed) and then usually once more during the night at around 3 or 4 before she wakes for the day at around 8. I am wondering if I could start phasing out the feeds during the night. I have a feeling that she is just waking up out of habit now instead of hunger but I would hate to think that I am starving her by refusing to feed her! Thanks.

Cadiz92 my 11mth old has slept through the night since he was 5wks old. When he was 5wks his routine was last feed 11pm and slept through until 7am at the earliest 6am as the months went by the bedtime got a bit earlier and the waking time a bit later. Now at 11mths he has his bedtime bottle at 7.30pm and is in bed by 8pm and I dont normally hear from him (unless he is teething or unwell) until between 7am and 9am in the morning when he gets his morning bottle and his breakfast (these are the only two bottles he gets). I think maybe your dd is probably waking more out of habit at this stage as if she is eating well during the day she should'nt be still hungry during the night. You must be feeling tired still feeding as I know if ds even wakes during the night and I have to go to him I do feel knackered the next morning! HTH..Aldav |

| cadiz, at 9months u most certainly can stop feeding her in the night. my aunt had a baby girl & she use to wake her tto feed her at night to & the doc told her she was mad, said if she was sleeping thru not to bother. my sisters kids slept thru the night really young tooher ds use to sleep from 11pm - 9am & he was only a few weeks old. my ds is 3month & he sleeps 12 hours a nite but i dream feed him at 12 so he goes about 8/9 hours without being fed. u should give her water if she is still waking up for a bottle, she will eventually get fed up of it & sleep thru, might take 1 or 2weeks. |

| apparently a baby can sleep through once they hit the eleven pound mark, they have enough body fat and fuel to keep them going, that of course is better said than don and nobody told my ten month old that...I really wish they had! |

Cadiz, my DS is 9 months old too and sleeps through. Occasionally he does wake and chatters or cries a bit but it's not hunger as he does go back to sleep himself. I started to realise a few months ago that babies his age perhaps can't sleep through but can go through the night without food. I think it's worth distinguishing. Maybe your DD would be happy with just a soother. Hope that helps. |

| My DD slept through from about 8 weeks. I do know that my SIL had to go through a week of refusing to feed her 5 month old when she woke in the middle of the night. She said she just sat beside her as she cried. And after a week, (slightly less) she never woke again for that middle of hte night feed. It sounds painful but she said it was worth it. Good luck. |

Hi Cadiz and all
I wish there was a magic answer to this but I guess I'll never know it til it happens. If I had known I would be still waking in the night at this stage (nearly 11months) i might not have had a baby at all! Joke. But sometimes you don't see the funny side of being woken in the night. We dropped the night feed or rather she dropped it herself around 9months. It just happened over a few days and while she is still waking and we have to resettle her sometimes twice, sometimes more and rarely not at all we don't have to get a bottle sorted anymore.
Only thing with our Miss is that she is standing up in her cot rattling the bars and crying so we have to go into her. Have tried leaving her and its worse lying there listening to it than getting up and doing something about it. The odd time I've tried it she has finally flopped down and fell asleep on top of her bedclothes and wakes up again anyway cos she is cold. She has a gro bag with snappers on which she pops when she stands. Must see about getting one with a zip.
So I have no answers and yes you do hear people saying their baby slept through at 8 weeks or whatever (and good for them), but I'll bet there is a lot more people out there whose babies don't for ages. So don't beat yourself up about it if they are not. Not that that's what you are doing but just in case. Other people can drive you mad cos they always ask 'are they sleeping' and you just feel like saying bugger off to them cos its such a sensitive issue when they are not! Well that's the way I feel anyway.
Somehow like everything else this will all end and be a distant memory.
Best Joan

| Cadiz my ds is 6 mths and he still wakes up every night at least once. When he was a few weeks old people would say "oh when he hits 12 weeks he'll sleep all night" well he didn't and still isn't. I've tried dream feeds, keeping him up later (he's knackered by 7 and usually in bed by 7.30) putting him down earlier, watering feeds withholding feeds and nothings worked. What really upsets me is when some wagon comes along and says that their breastfed baby (I gave it up because I was exhausted) has been sleeping through the night since 2 weeks - I feel like slapping her smug face. Every baby is different and heres praying it won't go on forever - I know your pain girl!!! I have a night off this Saturday and I'm getting into bed as soon as my little angel is gone and will only get back out when he comes home HEAVEN!! |

My little boy is 3 months.Hardest thing for me was my mother-in-law telling me that I was spoiling him cause I was feeding him during the night!! (he only takes one feed between 7pm and 7am!) Really believe every baby is different.Probably smaller babies will have to feed more frequently as they have less reserves to last the night.

Hi Cadiz
I would be lying if I said our dd (9 months) sleeps through the night regularly, had our first night in weeks last night. But I havn't had to feed her at night for months. She gets her last bottle at 7/7.30, in bed by eight, and her first bottle the next day is 8.30-ish. I guess your baby is waking out of habit, have you tried giving her water instead of milk, as she should be getting enough food/milk during the day to get her through the night. |

| my ds slept through from 3 weeks but now that he is 16 months he wakes every night to come into us...every baby is different...go with your instincts..a midwife said to me that if you can get a baby to sleep two nights in a row then they no longer need a night feed and that's what happened to us...hth |

There's a difference between waking in the night and needing a feed at night. I would have thought at nine months your little one wouldn't need a feed between 7:30pm & 8am, but of course that doesn't mean she'll sleep through. And even after a baby starts sleeping the night there's no guarantee she'll keep up that habit. |

| Thank God my little fella isn't the only 'angel'... still waking twice at night for feeds (he's 3 months). Like many of you have said, dont you feel like slapping the women who's babies sleep through! I do envy them tho. Now, I know the secret to them sleeping through is for them to get their 'full requirement' of feeds during the day. But what is that exactly? As all babies are different, can you go by the recommended quantities? My fella wont drink more than 5 ozs at any one feed, sometimes even leaving an ounce. Between 7am and 7pm he would have about 5/6 bottles (depending on what time he wakes), is that enough? He is a good weight, think about 13 lbs now. Any thoughts? |

Cadiz, by 9 months babs should be safely able to sleep through without feeding. If its not happening automatically ie still waking and seems to want feed, I suggest that you start reducing the amount you are giving on the middle of night feed. Eg (assuming bottlefeeding) if she is currently taking 6oz in that bottle reduce it by 1oz every night, effect should be that she will take more food during day. When you have reduced it to say 2oz then try not feeding her just encourage her to go back wot sleep without feed (using soother if she uses one or just resettling her, may involve crying), or if that doesn't work offer her cooled boiled water instead of the milk.
If this works, then apply same principle to the dream feed.
Baby who is on 3 solid meals a day is safe to sleep 12 hrs at night.
Good luck |
